I suppose you do not have any other software from mcafee on your computer. The following steps will remove all mcafee software from your computer. so beware.First make a backup of your registry.
Clickon start > run . Type regedit. press OK.
the registry editor window opens.click on File > Export.
Save the file by giving it a name.It will create a registration entries file in my documents folder. Then click on Edit > Find. Type "mcafee" click on Find Next. The search will stop at the entry containing "mcafee" , read it once to make sure it is mcafee. Then click on it, on the entry in the right panel.and press delete key.or right click and select delete.Press Ok to confirm. Now press F3 to search again.
Delete the entry if found. Continue till you find and delete all mcafee entries.close the registry editor.
Also look for the folder name in C:\program files\
containing mcafee. If found delete the whole folder.
Restart your computer. If everything goes smoothly, you have removed mcafee successfully.
After that download and install a registry cleaner
Free RegScrubXP registry cleaner
http://www.sofotex.com/RegScrubXP-download_L7528.html
Run it. It will remove any traces left by mcafee in the registry.

The method provide above does not remove McAfee completly from your machine. I had McAfee and just did not like it. It took me a few hours to get it off my machine.
Ctrl + Shift + Esc will bring up Task manager, and look in the processes panel. Processes that are installed after windows that are not window services will have the actual file name that is running.
Search in Windows Explorer and find that file, right click the file, Properties, Version (Most times) and you will find clues as to who wrote the file.
If you find a file that claims to be McAfee, rename it by putting a new extension on it, I use .delete
You also have to go through the registry and remove referrences to McAfee and remove files from the windows directory at the same time. (Don't reboot after doing the registry, but do the registry first)
In Windows directory you'll find 'regedit.exe'. A good place to start is
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ RunOnce
Look for McAfee and delete entries there. Ctrl + F and type McAfee will help you search the whole registry.
This is a difficult thing to do and shame on companies that don't provide easy outs to get their crap off your machine.
After all this realize that doing this kind of stuff is VERY tricky and can mulch you machine very quickly requiring a reinstall. (which would get rid of McAfee) so I take no responsibility.

Mcafee can be a pain to get rid of. Look around their website. I think they and norton have small programs you can download to remove their software. unless it is connected with your virus program, you might be able to go to remove it from the startup list so it won't boot with windows. just go to run, then type msconfig, click the startup tab and look for the program in the list, uncheck it, click apply and that might lessen your woes

If you have windows XP, the easiest way to fix that problem is to run system restore. That restores your system to a previous time it was working properrly. To access it, from the start menu, click on all programs; click on accessories, then select & click on system tools; then select & click system restore. Follow the directions. Its pretty easy.
