My friend used to have a fear of cotton wool - don't know if you could call it a phobia.

Someone with a similar prob had got to the root of her problem.....it was caused when she was a child and had a general anaesthetic to remove teeth....when she woke up she felt ill with a mouthful of gauze....ever since, she's associated gauze and cotton wool with a bad memory! It could be that!
Though the noise it makes is pretty horrible - similar to scraping a fork across a plate/pot, or nails down a blackboard.
An old teacher told me the noises like this make us feel uncomfortable because of a primitive reaction.....when we were roaming the earth as apes....apparently if there was danger one ape would warn the others with a horrible squeaky, screechy noise! This is embedded in our genetics and today we feel edgy with similar noises! Don't know if it's the same as the cotton wool noise but Interesting huh!

I knew someone at school with a fear of cotton wool. I didn't like her, she bullied me for a long time. I got my revenge when I found out hehe.
Nasty I know, but she made my life hell for 5 years.

I know that fear of certain fabrics (i.e. cotton) is called "Textophobia" and it is quite common. This a broad term to encompass all fears of fabrics. It need not be cotton, but any textile (fabric), whether it be cotton, rayon, nylon, wool, etc

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha, I bet his mates love that at the pub. A school friend of mine used to be scared of taking pills like aspirin in case he choke on them so he crushed them up with a spoon.
