Training. Wether it be private, community college, or from the company that hired you ( if they are willing to train you ). Some states require the tech to be certified. Not all though. Certainly helps to have some medical knowledge, experience. It just depends on how desperate the company/clinic is. I've certainly seen non-medical people trained. Most without good results, but there were some that caught on nicely.

for a tech not much at all, be willing to learn the machinery and work around blood and stuff. Might be helpful to have some healthcare knowledge.
