Not including rings, and honeymoon. JUST for the reception and wedding itself.

And the dress, and the food, and the presiding minister, and the rental of the space... I think we spent over 10k. I'm pretty sure we spent less than 20k though.

Well I don't know if this will help because I am in Canada but my wedding was this past July and it was a total of about $5000. That's it. That included the dress, the cake, the decorations, all the napkins and favors, the girls dresses (2) the tuxes (4), the food for 100 people, the hall rental, the DJ, the rings, the marriage commisioner, all the flowers, and the alcohol. We played it real cheap and why spend lots on everything if you don't have the extra money. And some girls pay like $1000-$2000 on a wedding dress and accessories, I paid $300 for my dress and about $50 for me veil and tiara. So yeah Good luck and congrats.

We spent about $400 ... for everything! Announcements, reception, wedding, rings, and all! Man, we were soooooo young back then. I remember, my bride said "I don't need a ring. Just get me a pretty flower for my finger!" She got a ring anyway, though we don't wear them anymore. She's nurse, and she was always afraid she'd lose it. I'm always either too fat or too thin, and it never seems to fit!

We've had our ups and downs, and times when we just wanted to throw in the towel and run away screaming in opposite directions, but we're still together. We've been married more than 13 years ... and we still have our original love letters!

We agreed thirteen years ago to save ourselves from a pointless debt, have a very small but beautiful wedding in the most frugal fashion we could manage, and then enjoy the married life with a little extra money in our pockets!

How'd we do it? I know purists and lovers of big lavish weddings will cringe, but here it is.

For invitations, we went to Wal-mart and bought 50th wedding anniversary cards, and dated them 50 years in the future! We had a wedding by a JofP (justice of the peace) at the chapel of our university (a beautiful little thing, with oak pews and rails, stained glass windows, only about 30 feet from end to end). We bought a CD for music. My brother took the photos. Her friend threw the reception at their house. We only had about a dozen people there. She wore a white dress she already owned, and I bought a black suit and tie I still have. It was a beautiful little wedding. There was a time when I regretted not having the big wedding, but she was never bothered about it that I knew of, and now, looking back, I can't get over how sweet and charming it all was: so inept, so badly performed, and badly photographed, but the people were so kind, and the JofP did such a fine job, and said such nice words. It was a good way to get married.

A wedding doesn't have to be big and expensive to be beautiful, and a long-lasting marriage isn't guaranteed by a big expensive wedding nor thrwarted by a small and modest wedding. A good marriage is hard work, and it takes a team effort. It doesn't matter if you have a big wedding or a small wedding: just make it a memorable wedding.

20K sounds about right just for the wedding ceremony and reception. BUT theres a huge difference based on where you live.
I live in Chicago which is an expensive city to live in and I was pricing it out and with the banquet rental, flowers, cake, music, photographer, minister, food, open bar, and little misc things, for 140 people it was about $28K and thats for a small guest list. If you live in the middle of Montana or some rural area, it will be much cheaper.
Best advise...... go to vegas, save $20-25k and put it to better use elsewhere or look into a beach wedding down in Florida. Thats what we're doing and its much much cheaper

It really depends on the type of wedding oyu want. We are estimating aprox. $25,000 in total but we are paying $18,000 for just the reception. About $88 per person. But thats a sit down dinner for 200 people including a midnight seafood buffet and open bar. We live in Canada and thats about the average price for weddings now a days. But in our family money is the usual gift at a wedding and on average most people will put $100 per person.

I think 20k is over board. We are getting married in and we set a budget at $6000.00 and I've stayed under it plus we bought all the brides maid dresses. We just keep shopping around to find the best deals. When we started looking the prices for everything was crazy but we just keep at it until we found something not so pricey. I got a reception hall for up to three hundred people for $350.00.

My (now) husband and I looked into an elegant wedding and reception, and no matter how we tried to control spending, it would have outrageous! We decided to take both his and my parents to Las Vegas for a 5 day vacation. We had a lovely chapel wedding, ( a Celtic ceremony ) and an overall great time! We had announcements made, and mailed them the day of our wedding in Las Vegas to our friends and families. I think we paid a total of $3000.00, including everyone's airfare, hotel rooms, dress, and entertainment for the 6 of us. Save your $20,000.00 for a down payment on a new home. Good Luck.

I'm getting married in Jan, 2008. It's the off-season but we are looking at $65 per person just for dinner that about $6500 not including tax and tips and renting the hall and cake and decorations and the dress/tux, and many other things. My budget is 20k and whatever is left over is going to paying off bills my fiance and I have.

Weddings are expensive. You better start saving!

Small wedding with only 8 guests
marriage licence $150
marriage ceremony $150
chinese restaurant $100

I spared no expense brother

Plus I had to by pants and shirt and jacket ~ $200
and the rings cost me around $500 for both

Just over $1000, plus my dad paid for the chinese restaurant

save the 20 k for a deposit on a house

I have done two weddings in the past year and I did not spend over $5000 on either. They were both nice church weddings for young couples. This included invites, flowers, dress, reception decor, food and DJ for the dance. We are in northern Minnesota.

National average is about 20k, and depending on where you live that could be really high or really low...As a wedding coordinator I have seen budgets from 10/15k-over 100k...Setting a budget and sticking with it is the best way to make sure you don't go over.
