ALice,Betty,Carol, and Dorothy were a lifegaurd,a lawyer, a pilot, or a professor. Each wore a white, yellow, pink or blue dress.
The lifeguard beat Betty at Canasta, and Carol and the pilot often played bridge with the women in pink and blue dresses. ALice and the professor envied the woman in the blue dress, but this was not the lawyer as she always wore a white dress.
What was each woman's occupation and dress color?

We know that betty is not the lifegaurd and the lawyer wears a white dress.
Somebody help me, this might be a question on my philosophy mid term and I can only figure part of it out.

Yup,
Alice-Pilot-Yellow
Betty-Professor-Pink
Carol-Lawyer-White
Dorothy-Lifeguard-Blue
It helps if you do a grid with all four names, jobs and colours one after the other on the vertical, and the same on the horizontal, then cross off or tick which options are not possible/are known
eg
In the Betty row, you would place a cross in the lifeguard column; as the lifeguard beat Betty she can't be the lifeguard! In the Lifeguard row you would then put a cross in the Betty column.
Similarly, in the white row, you would place a tick against the lawyer column, and crosses against the other 3 occupations in the white row, then crosses against the 3 other colours in the lawyer column. White can belong to no other occupation and the Lawyer can only wear white.
Gradually you should tick or cross enough boxes to be able to work out by a process of elimination what's what.
hope this helps.

I love these things. I used to do them all the time in my 'advanced' class, lol.
It's been a while since I have done one, so I would check over my answer before you trust me 100% but I am pretty sure this is right.
Alice is the pilot who wears the yellow dress
Betty is the professor who wears the pink dress
Carol is the lawyer who wears the white dress
Dorothy is the lifeguard who wears the blue dress
Got any more? :o)

Alice, pilot, yellow
Dorothy, lifeguard, blue

Carol, lawyer, white
