I was unaware that was the case. I would think if they insult you on any level then you would have reason to doubt their religious affiliation to begin with. What did they say to offend your intellect? And what was the question you asked? Did you ask a question that could seem inflammatory? If so maybe they let their emotions override their better judgment.

Athiests try that too, so it's not just a religious thing, or Atheism IS a religion and they are actively converting!
Anyone who loses tries out oneupmanship. I think it has to do with needing a prescription for Viagra.

We don't insult your intelligence. We are telling you that you are close-minded to the possibility that there is a higher power than yourself. You lack faith and reason. Pope John Paul ll wrote an encyclical in 1989 called "Faith and Reason" and it is packed full of God's revelation and our human mind that can use rational thought to see His revelation. It's a very good read, I highly recommend it to anyone who has doubt.

Probably for the same reason that when non-theist people don't agree with you, they insult your intelligence.
Mankind has issues with superiority complexes and arrogance. (Psst.. it's called "sin". Everyone does it, but we try not to. Most of time, sin is caused by temptation... this temptation comes in the form of goading).

First of all, we mankind are all religious, whether we accept that fact or not. (The 'god' may be self). So, it is easy for man to put someone else down; as it may help make us 'look better' (in one's opinion). Besides, one may not completely acknowledge that there is a higher power (Christians refer to him as God).

Sometimes, ( and im not meaning you) people ask questions that are so simple to know the answer to if they would only read the bible. Then they will know for their self. they are relying on others to determine the answer to something they can know for their self, if they would only read the bible....
