My 13 year-old cat Burmese, Coco, died this June and I'm having a hard time getting through the death.
She died of Kidney failure, when we put her down, she was so weak I wasn't even able to hold her and say good-bye. I said good-bye but it didn't feel like it was enough.
I loved her so much. She would stay with me at night and let me hold her in bed.
I have a 6 month old tabby kitten now, who we got 3 days after she died. I don't feel close to her at all. She doesn't stay on our bed at night and fall asleep in my arms like Coco did.
I hate talking about her because it makes me sad all the time. I'm so used to seeing her sprawled out in front of our heater, now she's not.

Any advice on how to deal with her loss?

You may never actually 'get over' it.
It is DEVASTATING.
But as time passes, it will get easier to cope.

I still think about and have dreams about a kitty I lost 20 years ago. I mean...they're your kids, right?

I'm very sorry about Coco.

sorry about your loss. I've had cats since I was eight and now at 21 i will tell you that it's not easy getting over their deaths. I had a cat that died of pneumonia. I cried for weeks and wouldn't go anywhere near another cat. The thing is to give it some time until you get a new cat. I'd get a new kitten and have it with me as much as possible so it learns to be affectionate. I think you tried to replace Coco way too early and most probably this new kitten feels your resentment which is why it's keeping its distance. Give it time and all wounds will heal.

I have lost a cat (12years) and a dog (13years). It is hard. They are like part of the family. You know it is funny. I was never allergic to cats,. After I lost Kitty, I am very allergic to them..Weird isn't it? anyway. Let some time pass, Do not run out to (replace) her or him. I was at a pet store one day and "the Ark" was there. they are nonprofit organization that does not believe in putting animals down Instead they foster them out until adoption...Anyway that is how I found my three year old dog Rusty. Just by chance..fell in love with her right there. Those are the best animals to get. This will happen to you also. And you will find that your heart can accommodate another cat....You will get over her just give it time....

It is good to talk about your loss. Try to think about all the fun you had with your Coco. All the joy she made you feal. Be happy she is no longer in pain. And most of all be Thankful for all the years God let you & Coco be best of friends. Sounds like you 2 had a very happy life together. No one can take the good thoughts away. NO other kitty can take her place. But it is so nice you have another kitty. I can tell you LOVE your Pets!!

Sorry for your loss....I know how you feel, but I don't think you should have gotten a kitten. Myself, I haven't got the patience with a kitten any more. When my old cat had to be put down, a few weeks later I got a full grown beautiful ragdoll cat someone was giving away, and lovin' was instant. Maybe this is your problem. I'll never forget Jen but I love Sammi.

That's so sad..losing a pet would be just like loosing a human loved one , it takes time alot of time, You could always look at pictures and remember the good times and cherish them. I think getting a new cat is good in a way but I think it senses that your mourning and is keeping it distance. Remember that the new cat isn't going to replace the one you lost. Treat the new cat like an individual and love it and care for it..but at the same time keep your lost cats memories alive...You will bond with it as time goes on..its still to early

It's going to be hard no matter what, but someday it will seem a little bit easier... Here is a web site for you...

Your new kitten will bring you joy, give it time... you are having a hard time only because you've had many great years with your other cat and this one is new to you, but you will grow to love your new cat too, just give it time.

Here is another site to... http://petloss.com/
I've been through the very same thing, so I know it can happen. I'll always feel the loss, but do have wonderful memories too.

Short term, pet loss is extremely hard. I have been more upset over the death of pets than people in my life, simply because I never fought with the pets, never was betrayed by a pet, never had my feelings hurt by a pet. --I can't say that about any human I've ever known.

It takes time. I just had to get farther from the event to be able to get on with normal life. I will always remember my departed pets and feel wistful about them. It takes time, not to forget, but just to take the edge off the hurt.

Best of luck to you.

Take time off. Give yourself as much time as you need, and eventually the hurt will lessen. Your new kitten will probably not fill the void in your heart Coco left, but you can nurture your relationship with her too.

Bottom line: Don't rush things, or force yourself to forget or get over it, etc.
