Highlighting in naturally dark hair will look silly and unnatural, and it'll severely damage your hair due to all the bleaching that is required. You may experience some brittleness and breakage after this.
Not worth it. You've got a beautiful hair colour.

Proper highlights shouldn't go all the way to the scalp. They should keep the mixture about 1/8 - 1/4 inch from the roots to look natural - highlights don't grow out of your head, they come from the sun. You shouldn't lose any hair from highlighting, unless the damaged parts of the hair tangle and you yank your comb through wet hair too roughly. (All colored hair will suffer damage to some degree - that's how the color process works.)
You will have to use a lot of conditioning products. Are you sure you want to do this? Black hair is so beautiful as it is. But you don't have to go with just blonde. You could have mahogany, light brown, or other shades that won't be so obviously "faux."

I have long, super dark brown hair. 6 months ago I decided to try platinum highlights...
The first set was great. When I went back a few weeks later to get my roots touched up... my new highlights totally cooked my hair. I noticed it while I was running my fingers through my hair... there was blonde hair in my hand that looked like spaghetti... Every strand that was platinum was over processed and broke off. There are sections of my hair that are only about 4 inches long. The rest of my hair is half way down my back.
Use your best judgment and talk about it with your stylist.... mine didn't seem to care.
I would advise you NOT to go incredibly light. A soft brown or a hint of red would look incredible!

I had highlights in my naturally dark brown hair, it didn't cause hairloss. I did go to a professional however. You will have to lift your hair before applying color which could be damaging. Dyed hair takes alot of up keep to prevent damage so seek pro help, instead of dyeing it yourself.

I have brown hair but my friend coloured her hair blonde, it looked a bit strange at first but when it grew out she had her hair cut to have blonde tips and it looked amazing! I don't think you will suffer any hair loss. =D

You will be fine.I do my hair All the time and sure, you lose a few strands but nothing major .the same amount you lose when you brush your hair.
If you lose your hair then I would be bald by now.. :)
