There is a silver bar you can buy that you rub your hands on underwater and it takes the onion smell off...I think you can do it with a silver spoon but I'm not sure if it needs to be stainless steel or not. Not sure why it works but it does.

All the above answers work very well. Dry skin is also a major cause of retaining the smell. You could try making sure the skin on your hands is not too dry by rubbing cooking oil on your hands like you would moisturizer, but be sure to towel off as much as you can before you start cutting to avoid slipping. This seems to work well for me. Try this in addition to the other advise for after you cut them and you'll have no more smell.

I agree with all the respondents who say use lemon juice. For the future, be sure to always run your hands under very cold water before cutting the onion. That closes your pores and prevents the onion smell from penetrating as well.

Hi even if you do use strong smelling ones the smellof onions wont go. Ive heard bread works rubbing it on your hands after wards, but i can never be bovered. In a few shops now you can get this metal block thing that u think deodarises your hands from various smells.

After you have cut the onions, shake salt on to them & rub together, then wash them using soap. Also using lemon or vanilla essance will get rid of the smell.

You can get this stuff at drugstore.com and I've seen it in regular stores:
Gourmet Kitchen by Upper Canada
After-Cooking Hand Deodorizer, Wasabi Green Tea - 5.2 oz
$9.99
Its a little pricey, but it will take any smell off your hands.

Stainless steel can remove the scent of onion or garlic, if you have a metal sink, try rubbing your hands against the side

Stainless steel. My husband went to culinary school and this was a trick he learned. Same is true for garlic smells.
Run your hands on something stainless steel and no more smell.

Rinse them in methylated spirits ( your hands...not the onions) and set fire to them. The alcohol burns off on the surface of your hands and takes away the onion smell. Simple!
