I have not visited Chiang Mai. Try www.asiarooms.com, they have prices in different currencies, pictures, and reviews. They have a range of hotels from 2 star to 4 star. The price variation even in a rating makes it subject personal tastes and preferences. There are 4 star hotels in Bangkok that range in rate from USD 47 a night to USD 130 and accomodations are not much different. Pricey is subjective consideration. I try to find one that has consistent reviews, few if any negatives.
