It is pretty much impossible to go back in time, as if you think about it, you go back and change an event which may result in you never being born. For instance you go back and kill hitler at birth then the ww2 would probably never happen which would change the lives of nearly everyone on the planet which would affect everyone alive today. Which would result in the person who invented the time machine never being born my head hurts

We are able to go back in time when we travel by aeroplane (different countries, different time zones) and I am sure it makes no difference if you step in anything or not - unless it's dog poo which isn't a very pleasant experience!
