If i format drive c: and install fresh copy of windows on C: would the programs (software) i have on D: not work cus the stuff are not in the windows folder ? if so what can i do to keep my programs because i have formated so many times ? tanx

Once you format all installed links/connections to the Windows registry are lost ... any programs you had previously installed will not work unless you reinstall them also ... your data will be fine but the programs to open them won't work.
If you constanly format due to viruses (or because you need to get a life) you'd be better off doing a fresh install of XP and all programs ... complete all updates then "ghost" the build ... the next time you have to reformat all you have to do is backup your data then run the "ghost" image disk and your computer will be as fresh as a daisy in no time :)
Symantec make Ghost but there are others also Paragon make a reasonable on called Drive Image
