I stayed at a hotel on the Gold Coast 2 weeks ago, it had a safe in the room, and to reset the combination on that one you had to either press the # button enter the new code then push the * button, or the other way around, try those two ways, should work ok

If the batteries are fine, then open the safe and look at the back of the door, there is a little red button and there should be instructions on the back of the door or inside the battery compartment.
