Never heard that one, A "Black Cat" to me, other than the obvious is a cool black fella.

I have never heard that expresion and i am an oldie the only thing I can think of as it is a traffic officer it may be to do with cats eyes in the road or they used to drive black and white cars in olden days and coming up behind you unaware may liken to cats.

They are refered to as 'Black Rats' - not cats. Black because the uniform they used to wear, and rats because they rode around in packs. You might occasionally see private cars with a small cartoon 'black rat' sticker in the front or rear windscreen, as this shows other traffic officers that this driver is also a black rat (off duty) and to go easy on them!

are they ? oh welo black cats are considers bad luck and im guessin people think its bad luck to be caught by a police traffic officer.

Within the police force they are known as black rats its a kind of interservice nick name as the beat copper is known as a wooden top

I work with the police and i have never heard of the above...could give you some other names tho!!

That's a new one on me...but it's probably 'cos they're bad luck and they lie in wait for you to park your car somewhere illegally before they pounce!
