YAKSHAS are class of supernatural beings to gaurd anything, wealth, properties etc. Authorities differ as to their origin. They have no very special attributes, but they are generally considered as inoffensive, and so are called Punya-janas, 'good people,' but they occasionally appear as imps of evil.

When Pandavas were in exile, one day Panchali wanted some water and she requested Sahadeva to fetch some water from a nearby pond. Acordingly he went to the Pond but he heard a voice saying

"I will not allow you to take water from the pond and if you want you have to answer my auestions or otherwise you will die"
Sahdeva did not heed to the warning of Yaksha and and stpped into the pond, but fell dead immediately. Subsequently draupati send her other three husbands Nakula , Arjun and Bheema and they also met the same fate. Lastly it was Yudhistira's turn and when he went to the pond he heard the same voice which asked him to answer the question. Yudistra readily agreed.
Yudhishtira answered all he questions put by the Yaksha correctly. The Yaksha was non other than Dharmaraja (Yama) himself - i.e. Yudishtir's father. The Yaksah asked Yuditir to take two of the four brothers dead and he selected Arjuna and Sahadeva. Yaksha wondered why Yuditra did not ask for bhima or Nakula for which he said Apart from me another son of my mother (Arjun) and our another mother Madridevi's son (Sahadeva should atleast live to do Dharma.the Yaksha was happy to hear the Dharma adopted by Yudistra and returned all the four of them.

This portion in Mahabaratha is to show the justice Yudishtir adoped. So he was fit for having the name Dharmar (another Name) as told by Chakravarthi C.Rajagopala Chari in his book Mahabharata.

during the 12 years exile of Pandavas in the forest one day Draupadi wanted some water so Saha deva the youngest of the lot went to fetch water. when he was about to fill water from a tank nearby he heard a voice saying"do not touch the water without answering my questions or else you will die"
Sahdeva ignored the warning and dipped his vessel in water and fell dead. The same fate over took the other three brothers Nakula , Arjun and Bheema, finally Yudhistira went and when the voice called him he said please go ahead and ask your questions I will answer them.
The questions are deeply philosophic and are in maha bharata vana parva chapter. Yudhishtira answered all of them satisfactorily and then yama who was in the form of yaksha appeared and blessed him. Yam said I will give back two of your brothers so you choose any two out of this four. Yudhistira chose Arjuna and saha deva. Yaksha asked why not you other brother Bheema instead of saha deva To which Yudhishtira said' We have two mothers Myself and Arjun will be for mother Kunti and Sahadeva will be for Mother madri. Yama was pleased by the justice of yudhishtira and gave him back all his brothers.

All pandavas except Yudhister were killed by ignoring the advice of Yaksha.

When Yudhister reaches there, Yaksha asks him to reply his questions before drnking water. Thus Yaksha asked some beautiful questions to which Yudhister replies most wisely

Yaksha who is actually Dharam Dev himself, then gives back life to his brothers

for example:
Qn: Who is higher than sky
Ans: father
Qn. What is the biggest load?
Ans: Dead body of son on the shoulder of father
Q.: Heavier than earth?

Yudhishthir And Yaksh

Since the 12 years were coming to an end, Paandav were planning for their 13th year - Agyaatvaas (the hiding year). Bheem would work as a cook, Yudhishthir would work as a courtier, Nakul would take care of horses and Sahadev would work with cows. Arjun was going to teach music and dance.

Once when Paandav were living in Dwait Van, during their final stay of a few months, a Braahman came to Yudhishthir and reported that a deer took away his sticks to make fire (called Arani). Since he could not fulfill his daily ritual to make fire, he was worried about it. So all five brothers went to look for that deer. They saw him, followed him but he disappeared very fast. All were very unhappy with this incident, They felt thirsty, they sat under a shade of a tree and tried to find out of the reason of this calamity. Nakul said - "We haven't done anything such that we should face this situation." Yudhishthir said - "Nakul, when calamities befall a person they don't come alone, they come in numbers, and they are sent to us and we just have to bear them. We are nobody to question for their reason. Nakul, we are all very thirsty, see if you can see any spot of water."
