I bought an old house and am doing a kitchen remodel. To get ideas and learn about the newest products, I watch HGTV. They have one program devoted just to kitchens and baths. By watching these programs, I have a good plan and will be extending my kitchen into the den. We have already removed the den-kitchen wall. Look carefully at the wonderful new products for counter tops. I particularly like the concrete tops that can be used without fear of being burned by hot pots. (You can get ideas online, too. www.hgtv.com)

If it's clean and modern you are looking for, then there is nothing more clean and modern than European kitchens.
I am a K&B designer and I can tell you that much of my inspiration comes from going to my local Borders, Barnes and Noble, or Chapters and just looking through the kitchenand bath design magazines from Europe.

Some major kitchen trends I've seen lately are thick-looking countertops, very simple door styles with striking long pulls, well-utilized backsplash space (for example - a rail that you can put accessories on - it gets stuff off your counter), bold colour accents on neutral backgrounds (for example - tile, counter, and cabinets are neutral - and backsplash is bright), and very little visual texture (like no strikingly veined marble).

I design in the Michigan/Ontario area - and let me tell you that almost no-one goes the whole-hog Euro look. Most people will pick and choose elements or soften them to make them more - I don't know - North American? Anyway - that's my long-winded suggestion - look at Euro design magazines!

Hope this helps!

To do most of the work yourself. That is the cheapest way in all honesty. There really is no difference in pricing from stick built to systems built homes. Also, you are on the right track building a 2 story instead of a ranch as most of your cost is eaten up in basement and roof trusses. You considerably cut down basement size and the amount of trusses with a 2 story. My advice, shop around. Get quotes and bids and do not jump into anything. Builders go over, most often, so be careful! Our builder went over 22k on our new house, it was a nightmare! Also, it is ok to cut corners on certain items. You do not need the most expensive tub surround, carpet or countertops. However well insulated windows are a good call. An appraisal will not judge your home by the brand name of the items in it, just that they are newer. Do not stick money in where you do not need to.

I think glass splash backs in the kitchen look so much better in the kitchen than tiles there are some fantastic colours When we built our house we saw a house similar to what we wanted, we knocked on the door explained the situation, the people were delighted that we liked their home and invited us in for a tour.We were thinking we wanted cathedral ceilings (which they had) they said they now wished they didn't have them because they couldn't put ducted air conditioning in their home, which we also wanted but we hadn't thought about that point. We completly changed our minds so give it a go !
