Mac downloads can have several different extensions now that it is based on Unix. The .dmg one is a disk image. It should open with Disk Copy that is part of the Mac OS X installation although sometimes Stuffit Expander will try to get in the way. You should change Stuffit Expander preferences to ignore disk images. Other types of files that will open fine on your Mac are .sit, .sitx, .hqx, .sea, .zip, .gz, and .tar. The .exe file is specifically for Windows and cannot do anything for you. Trash it and go back to the software company's site to see if they have a Mac version.

When you have a problem opening a zipped file, make a note of the error and check with either the company that made the download or with Stuffit web page. Sometimes some change in the Stuffit preferences will correct an issue or an updated version of Stuffit. If a .dmg image will not mount, be sure it is Disk Copy that is trying to mount it. As I mentioned, Stuffit should keep its hands off of disk images. Otherwise, on rare occasions Disk Copy can become corrupt and must be replaced to work. But usually the problem is caused by an incomplete download or a failed checksum which could indicate malware infusion.

You can't open .exe files on a Mac - only Windows computers can open them. You need a file with a .dmg extension to be able to open it on a Mac. Have a look at ( http://www.badderadder.com/2006/03/18/badder-adder-for-the-mac/ ) to see how to open it on a Mac.

For your .zip problem, you probably need Stuffit ( http://www.stuffit.com/mac/index.html )

Hope that helps!

I use Winrar and it works fine. I got it here http://j.mp/1p3PGk3
If you are looking for a good program to open zipped files (compressed files) the best solution is WinRar.
Cheers ;)
