you could make him a throw[blanket] out of fleece [they are called no sews]1yard&1\2 of fleece print and solid=3yds total pin all the way around as even as you can get it.cut 5inch squares out of all 4 corners take a ruler light chalk-trace straight line across then down trace 1 inch strips,only 5 at a time and not the strip at top dont pull to tight. do this all the way around when finished trim all strips so even all the way around. very nice home made gift have fun

Personally, I like giving usable things to poeple. You can buy him something like that which also contains something he likes (like... a T-shirt of his favorite band (?) I don't know, be original).

Make him a scrapbook of family photos to take with him. you don't say where he is going so it's kind of hard to know what he can take with him.
