Cheap, should not be a problem. Clean & safe (in a cheap environment?) might be difficult ;-) Bangkok has plenty to offer, accommodations to suit all budgets. Khao San Road area might be your choice. Also plenty of tourist class hotels with less than Bahts 1000 per night. Have fun!

Khao San Road is where most backpackers and those on a tight budget stay. Most hotels or Guest Houses down there are clean and certainly cheap. It`s a very Cosmopolitan Area. Other slightly more upmarket areas are on Sukhumvit Soi`s from 1-19.

I loved the Pathuwan Princess but book before you go - its cheaper! This one may be a bit pricey but it adjoins the huge MBK shopping centre & has good security.
The other one I like is The Swiss Park - very cheap & better than the other lower priced ones. Service very friendly. Near the train stations & Sukumvit Rd, lots of night markets. Plenty of cabs nearby. Nice restaurant, excellent room service.
Cheaper to book before you go usually

How cheap do you want? Sukhumvit Road has without doubt the most to offer - everything from chap fan rooms to 5-star. Take a look at Asia Rooms website, you will for sure find something to suit your budget there

For the "big city" experience, of course, Bangkok. For the beach beauty go to Hua Hin and for the north go to Chang Rai and/or Chang Mai.
Thailand is such a great country so be sure to allow plenty of time to do it all.

I stayed in a nice hotel... so no recomendations available on cheap..
but go visit Koh Samui. It costs $150 to fly there (less than 1 hour) and it is paradise on earth.
