I believe that all the words attributed to Jesus were not actually spoken by him. If he had really said some of those things, like "You Jews are of your father the devil," then he would be partly responsible for the anti-Semitism that developed after his death. Not that he would deserve to be killed, even had he said such things. But he would be partially guilty for the catastrophes that befell the Jews.

The thing is, I do not believe he really said that stuff. I firmly believe that those words were added later by people who were getting fed up that the Jews did not accept their new religion. Those are the people who are to blame for some of the anti-Semitism.

I don't believe in the death penalty, so I would never even say that those people deserved to be crucified.

I think she is very very wrong to say that. Don't think I'm saying she isn't. However, I wanted to try to explain where part of her sentiment may be coming from. If it truly was Jesus who put virulent anti-Semitism or anti-Judaism into the minds of his followers, then he really truly would be partially to blame for the atrocities. I think this is where she is coming from. She does not realize the difference between what the real Jesus actually taught, and what later "followers" came to believe and teach about Jews.

i think she is a moron for posting that. And im really surprised, I have seen her to be quite understanding of other religions in other answers, as well as a good speaker for the jewish faith. I even emailed her to ask her a question about jews and she sent me (an atheist) a good response. She probably got upset at the nature of the question and "lost it" for a minute.
I'm not defending her response, just saying what I know
And the sad thing is I have read far, far worse responses and questions than that

Belief in religion, any religion, fosters disrespect for other religions.

Do we respect each other's beliefs?? Can we not kill each other because of religion?? I think the answers to both of these questions is no.
