The technique for impressionist art was to use short brushstrokes of pure colours arranged so the blending was done in the eye of the viewer rather than on the pallet. That's about it really except that they also tried to paint outdoors on site which had not been done before.

Quick strokes of raw color, often complementary, with little or no blending, with a range of textures from thin wash to heavy impasto, often with bare canvas exposed. Much attention to the transient light of the scene, and atmospheric extinction.
