Push for a diplomatic solution with the warring parties that involves international peacekeepers from Iran & Syria. That is the only way we can have a country that doesn't erupt in a full-scale civil war, while still allowing us to leave.

Of course this would mean negotiating with "terrorists".. but the other options involve 1) splitting up the country (which has it's own problems), 2) continue fighting (no end in sight), or 3) leaving (likely continued violence and instability).

There is hardly ever a right or wrong way with these things. You need to evaluate all the information you have, way up your options and make the best decision you can. If we don't have all the facts how can we suggest or judge any thing that the American government does?. P.S in response to the first answer America will never resort to nuclear warfare. Their nuclear arsenal is for deterrence only, to deploy them would be against every thing that the land of the free stands for.

Guard the schools, the pipeline, the police stations, the radio stations and the TV station, the newspapers and take the soldiers off patrol.

Have more people train the Iraqi soldiers and police.

Have more troops in the supply section to get those police and soldiers weapons and armor. These guys are still way behind in gear.

By 2008 all the land should be turned over to the Iraqis and the U.S. should be finishing up training.

Enough is enough, he's a good leader and sticking to his guns, but it's time to admit to the world that mistakes and assumptions were made.

Go to the UN, present our rebuilding strategy to the world, debate, edit, vote, debate, edit, vote. Do.

Iraq is not a nightmare, it's a great opportunity to rebuild the center of civilization by having the world collaberatively pouring money and education into that region.

Troops out tomorrow, nuclear warheads in the next day.
America has to stop bluffing and show the world it has the power it claims. You don't need to use bullboy tactics like North Korea, but you do have to say "we are the biggest, and we tolerate no crap from no other country, and to prove it, watch this". For justice to be done, it must be seen to be done. No justice has been seen to be done in Iraq.

Here is what I see as the only exit strategy.
You stay in Iraq until there is no sectarian killing.
You consistantly try to bring all factions together to discuss their problems.
You support the countries administration until it is capable of managing the country on its own.
Then you pull out your military forces.

Withdraw from Iraq, and compensate it generously for the damage done, in order to begin reconstruction and stand firmly against Iran.
Let it be Iraq's war

Cut and run! I'm scared, j/k.

Bush will be looked favorably upon in the history books, second only to Reagan.
