Here in the US, the Islamic Council of North America declared the 23rd of September to be the 1st of Ramadhan. Based on astronomical data, that was impossible. It possibly could have been the 24th in some parts of North America, but in other parts of North America, was most likely the 25th. The Lunar months are based on actual sighting of the moon, not on any calculation. If each Islamic center sent a trusted representative out to search for the moon, the months would be more likely to correlate between centers in the same or near cities, but there really are differences in date around the globe. For the start of Ramadhan, the moon was first visible over Indonesia, on the 24th. Visibility proceeded eastward, across eastern asia, across the americas, then, last, across europe and the middle east on the 25th.
I agree with you that it seems inconsistent that the sun position can be determined based on a formula but the moon visibility can not. Formulas are much more reliable than actual sighting, because they do not depend on weather or observer. The problem would be getting everyone to agree on a single formula.

The Muslims in my community use a lunar calender and actually refer to astrologists in order to get an accurate date. Like for Eid ul Fitr if you see the moon the night before you celebrate it you will know that you have done it on the right day.

it can be done, but muslim festivals are fixed as per moon rotation and not by sun calender. muslim have to fiest agree for sun calender then only every year day of festival can be fixed as per sun calender.
you are feeling bad since view of moon has been made necessary.so if in one part it is visble today then Ed is next day and similarly visibiltiy in other part decide Ed in that part

" Feeling humiliated by non-muslims" is a wrong thing to say. There is no question of being humiliated.
At present , Muslim festivals are determined by actual observation of the moon and niot through calculations.I donot thing there is any chance at the moment of using theoretical calculations to fix festivals.
