If the terrorists are going against the laws of Islam, and are not supported by the mainstream Muslims, could a lesser (military type war, if I understand the term correctly) Jihad be declared on them?
If it's possible, then why hasn't it been done? The obvious perception to non-Muslims is that mainstream Muslims DO support the acts of the terrorists no matter what they say.

this is a VERY VERY good point.

I think the Judeo-christian world would be far more prone to believe the peaceful islamic side as truly being distinct from their less pleasant counterparts, if SOME serious gesture was made to demonstrate disapproval.

and by serious, I mean something that can be believed, not this "official" disapproval, while handing over a river of money under the table.

It did happen in my country. Some extremists attacked tourists and civilians falsely in the name of Islam and Jihad and they were arrested and got their due penalty. It gets complicated with international laws. For example, if an Egyptian extremist kills innocent people in the US, Egypt has nothing but to condemn this since US has the person and they are subject to the American law. You see?

If there is truly a difference then the title should be different.
Perhaps "Islam" and "Islam Light".
