I made a system update about two weeks ago including adding Windows Defender. I have purchased this system about two years ago with the original Windows XP, no funny business...promise.

Now, it claims I have a counterfeit version of the Operating System and is requiring that I purchase a legal copy.

What happened probably and how do I correct this?

I have tried using the Product Update Key program with the corresponding Product Key under my laptop.

It still says it's an invalid key - what happened?

Call the Microsoft number shown on your screen, their validation process screws up all the time.

Something obviously isn't right and just because you purchased it with an original CD is no guarantee ... the good thing is ... if you have the original windows CD and can remember where you got it from ...if it is a pirate copy Microsoft will replace it free of charge with a new copy of XP ... then they prosecute the person who sold it to you ... if you genuinely believe your copy is legit and have the disc ... contact Microsoft ... they're not the "monster" some make them out to be (no this isn't Bill's son....lol)
