I can sympathize with you..my husband would forget his own body parts if they weren't attached. Write everything down in a "special" book..ie:my hubby uses a log book nessesary for his job, he doesn't misplace or forget about it because it's always with him.In not so many words condition yourself to remember only one obeject..Next make a chant or a litany before any important task..ie:keys,wallet,lighter,smokes. And talk out loud to yourself if you need to { I do it all the time "what was I doing?!"}that helps. Try not to get angry at yourself either, it makes recall almost impossible.

Have you spoken to your family doctor about this problem? Many things can cause this to happen such as stress or a physical ailment, the list is a long one.
One of the best things you can do to sharpen your brain is doing crossword puzzles or play word games like Scrabble or Bookworm or even search a word. These games, although they are fun, does sharpen the brain and cause you to use more of your brain for other needed purposes. But before you do these things on your own, your best bet is to have a serious chat with your doctor about it. Other things may be going on in your brain that you are not aware of. Have your doctor check everything out first and then go from there.
Good luck to you and I hope you soon feel better.

knowing what you don't know is called conscious incompetence... you are recognizing that you don't readily retain stuff even that's important... so now you can move into the stage called conscious competence... creating for yourself and consiously using a set of practical tools (such as the log mentioned below) that will help you master yourself...
not all of us came wired to instinctively do some things but that doesn't mean they can't be learned...
you've got to train your brain... by using the tools regularly you will become, slowly but surely, consciously competent.... in time and with practice, as you use those tools and integrate them into your tasks, you will move to the stage called unconsious competence, more commonly known as "second nature"...
all our lives we go through learning stages... we learned how to go potty - we don't need to consciously remind ourselves how to wipe anymore... we dress ourselves without a checklist - bra, check; panties, check; deodorant, check... sure, if we are particularly distressed at a given moment, we might need to remind ourselves what we need to do but in those cases, thank heaven for the state of conscious competence...
you might also employ the use of a modified Johari window... four inboxes... one labeled Urgent but not Important; Important but not Urgent; Urgent & Important and; Not Urgent & Not Important...
a thought that occurred though is that you might be bored at your job... doesn't sound like your brain is engaged to its fullest capacity... perhaps once you master doing what you need to do when you need to do it, you will give thought to figuring out what kind of work would truly satisfy you... the skill of prioritizing is vital to humans feeling successful and satisfied with what they do
you can do this... you don't need meds or special therapy or education... everything you need to master yourself came with the package... some of us merely need to accept the task of activating our strengths
best of luck with this................
