Hey this is a long procedure.
First, place yourself in comfy position. Breathe slowly. Relax your body part by part as you exhale. Then count slowly backward from 100 to 1. When you reach 5, tell yourself that you're gonna quit smoking for good and that you'll always maintain a perfect body and mind. When you reach 3, say mentally that you'll be wide awake when you're at the count of one, and you'll be feeling better than before. At one, say again that you're wide awake and better than before.
Do this on a regular pattern, like if you do it before sleeping once, do it at the same time the next day. Do this for a month and meanwhile, keep away from smoking as much as possible. You can do this more than once a day. All it takes is a desire to stop smoking and determination.

Good luck!

The best way to quit smoking is through a gradual process. Slowly, but surely cutting down on how many sticks (or packs) you consume in a day. First, you must observe your smoking habit - when (after eating, during coffee breaks, while studying or reading, every 2 hours or 3 hours depending on your "craving" for a smoke) and where (at parties, gatherings, bathroom, cafeteria, smoking areas, etc.) you smoke and the triggers that cause you to light a stick. These triggers may be stress that you encounter in your daily activities like problems, excitement, nervousness, etc. Knowing these three supplementing factors of smoking, you can now control and forsee instances of you lighting a stick or two. Steer clear of social gatherings that consist of people who you know will likely make you smoke because they too smoke or spend less time inside the bathroom where you usually pass out time and smoke. When you have a habit of smoking after meals be cautious after you've eaten. Usually smokers say that the reason they smoke is because they feel nauseated after they've eaten and find smoking a relief. If this is the case then they sure eat nauseating food all the time! After you're done having your meal, instead of lighting a smoke try chewing gum instead or suck out a lollipop. This substitutes the "feeling" of having a stick of smoke in your mouth and keeps your mouth busy. As I've said quitting to smoke takes time. You must take it one step at a time until your ultimate goal is achieved and that is to never have to smoke again. If you can finish off 2 packs a day try setting a goal marker. Let's say throw one stick and consume the rest and add one stick to the bin every other day. If you finish off 10 sticks in a day throw one out the next day then throw two sticks the next then three.... until you consume only 1 stick which would probably be the last stick of smoke of your life! Because the next day you've outgrown your need for smokes. Well it's never easy to quit smoking but if you are determined to quit then the choice is your's. Discipline and patience is the surefire way to go.

I'm checking in to going to a hypnotist and see if that works.
I've tried the patch, the gum, the lozenge and the cold turkey thing and it didn't work for me.
People don't realize that we actually have Two habits to break, not just one. There's the cigarettes then there's the physical 'hand to mouth' habit. I solved the hand to mouth habit by drinking a bottle of cold water when my hands got bored and that helped. But I can't seem to get past the nicotine habit.
I had quit for about a year, then a couple of months ago, things beyond my control got me going again and once more the fight is on to quit.
I wish us both the best of luck.

take it from someone who put them down 4 weeks ago. I tried Wellbutrin and broke out in hives and had to go to the hospital because I was going into anaphylactic shock. Just put them down and know in your heart you are doing the best thing for yourself. To reemphasize another persons answer, you do stink!! Once you have put them down for about a week, you will know just how bad you smelled when you were a smoker. My daughter still smokes, and I can be across the room from her and her husband and they reek! You have a positive going for you in the fact that you desire to quit them. I am 44 and have smoked off and on since I was 18. (Mostly on) I did quit when I wanted to have a child since I miscarried the first. My brother died 2 months ago and that prompted me to want to quit since he suffered the consequences of being a smoker. I don't know how old you are, but my brother was only 48. That is not that old!! Good luck to you and I hope you can kick the habit.

I quit smoking for 20 years by replacing the smoking habit with a healthier habit like chewing gum!

Everytime I had a nicotine craving I chewed gum until it went away.

Another way is to tell your significant other and get a kiss whenever you get a craving!

Read my lips: DO NOT BUY THEM ANY MORE.. if you do not have them, you cannot smoke them. Cold turkey, and no other way. In about a week or two you will calm down. Just say no. Ever see someone die of lung cancer, or see a woman who is about 45 look so wrinkled that she looks 75, don't laugh, it happens. You stink too, your hair, your teeth are yellow, your apt. is full of stinky air, it is in your clothes, in your car and in your house. You do not think people know, but they do, they can smell you, because you stink. Cigarette stink and perfume, still stinks, but more. You can't get it off and out of things either. Ok, my father died of lung cancer, it is very aggressive, it will move all over your body before you can say "I want a ciggie", it is in your bones, and spreads. They put crap in there that make you crave it, you have a monkey on your back, just like dope. If you see someone who is dying of cancer, he is in a semi-coma, but still is trying to get the cigarette out of his pocket and putting his skeleton fingers up to his lips to take a puff. His head is bald, because the chemo made it all fall out, he cannot eat, and he has become a skeleton. You and the loved ones, go and see him but he cannot see you, they have to sit and wait and see your skeleton lay there. Do you still want a cigarette, your best friend, it is like a snake and ready to strike. You are hearing from a smoker and one that tried to quit and would go and fish them out of the garbage for that butt with just a small amt of the cigarette left to smoke. I was developing high blood pressure, since it was not detected, it did perm. heart damage. I have had a heart blockage and a stent in my heart. I quit and threw them away, and walked away almost 20 yrs ago, oh, yes, I did get cancer, breast cancer, and also heart disease. Still want one? My husband smoked a long time, but quit about the same time, he has COPD, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, no cure. I hope this helped you. I will tell you, put them down and save your life. Oh, yes, no one wants you around either, because no one smokes any more. Good luck.

Theres a brand new drug out called Chantix that works really well. Its not an antideppressant like Zyban or Wellbutrin so you don't have the weird side effects. Also above all, he has to be READY to quit otherwise no matter how good the drug it will never work.

i think personally you have to want to give up smoking no point in people telling you that stuff will kill you , we all know what it does to our bodies.
as for giving it up i think stone cold turkey is the only way , once you make your mind up that you are going to quit you will do it.

also if you have family and friends that smoke please ask them to respect your right not to smoke in your home / car etc.

1st week will be a tough ask , but stay strong and the following weeks will be all in your mind about the cravings.

all the best

LIve under water. You'll never get those suckers to light if you do that.

Seriously, though, just stop buying them, and if offered, tell people you don't smoke.
