Fact is if she really wants a lab; get her what she wanted... You can get a dog that will "statistically' live forever... and then it gets hit by a car on its second week at your home... Life is short; its a reality; so give her the dog she asked for... not what you think is better for her... just some advice...

mmmmmmm................ for me it will be a Chihuahua because it so so cute!!!!!
your question:
I have a thirteen year old daughter that really wanted a golden labrador retriever for a long time, so i decided to get her a DOG. I read somewhere thet labs usually die young and are prone to many illnesses, so i don't know if i should get her a lab or another breed of dog. Do you know any good breeds?
i suggest the breed maltese..a dog that belongs to toy group..that is a small cute dog..every girl would love it!!! you can dress the dog and because it has long shiny fur,, you can style it up any way you want..but it might cost a little in maintenance....you should always take the dog to the vet, wash it and trim its nail...train it first...if your daughter insists to buy a maltese...go and just follow her desire labrador dog...
You won't find a friendlier, happier, more loyal dog than a lab. Mine lived to the ripe old age of 13... and if you don't buy from a pet store or puppy mill... and please don't, there will be much less chance of having a puppy with congenital diseases or problems. Some labs are prone to arthritis or joint problems later in life, but your vet can diagnose those, and recommend proper food and/or supplements should those become necessary.

We have an Alaskan Husky who was breed not to have hip deplacia. He does really well with the kids I have 3 kids, 12,8, & 4. Of course it just depends on the breeder whether or not you get a good tempermant dog. My friend trains retrievers for people who are in wheel chairs .All her dogs have had to have the hip surgery but they are wonderful dogs. Very gentle.Plus they are smart and you and your daughter can teach them tricks. My friends golden Retriever can pick up her own toys and bones and put them in her little basket. She also has been trained to let people lay on her like kids and not be aggressive at all. Golden Retrievers are a wonderful breed. And beautiful dogs. Plus with their coats you could throw in a little chore and learning with it. By having your daughter brush its coat. Good Luck:)

That sort of dog is going to require a lot of care..daily brushing walking...if you feel your daughter is going to not take all this on (as they promise they will do) get the kind of dog you are prepared to look after and either way it really comes down to your lifestyle and the area the dog will be mainly in. A large dog obviously needs a larger space where as a lap dog or something smaller will not need to burn off quite so much energy. You need something that is not going to cause issues down the track .I have a boxer as a family dog but that was to much for my daughter to handle via walking(to big) so when she was 7 i got her a miniture fox terrier and she has taken care of her very well we have had her for nearly 6 yrs now and is the most wonderful little animal . Also cost wise for living a large dog is so much more to be desexed, eats more and genaral costs are more. All dogs have their known illnesses its having the affordability on regular vet checks and treatment if needed.Good luck

all dogs can die no matter what the satistics say, if you want a golden labrador retriever dog that may be healthyer, look for a responcible breeder that test for things like Hip Dysplasia, ect. And tell them you are looking for a nice put quality puppy and that you would be willing to have it spayed. That gives you a show quality/good health puppy, but at a resonable price because you are willing to spay it.

Having a puppy is like having a baby. It is a lifestyles lengthy dedication. You sound as though you can also have to reconsider this entire factor. You get a puppy in view that it's what you desire now not too please your peers and their ideals. You get a puppy to have a lifestyles lengthy buddy who's going to rely on you FOREVER to feed it, safe haven it, take it to the physician whilst it's ill or harm and like it it doesn't matter what it does or what anyone else thinks approximately it. All puppies aren't the equal and also you can not say if a puppy will likely be comfortably housebroken. Each puppy has its possess character and wherein one could also be convenient to educate an additional of the equal breed might not be. Pets aren't disposable and will have to now not be gotten on a whim.

The best companion dogs are generally mixed breeds and can be found at your local shelter.
The problem with looking for a specific breed is that they each tend to come with their own genetic health issues.

Kids and Boxers! Its like peanut butter and jelly. Sure I might be slightly bias as I own a boxer, a 13 year old girl and a 2 year old girl. I have had mutts, rotts and even a min pin. Kids and Boxers, there is nothing better. You can see the cutest pic of a boxer and a baby at www.birchcoveboxers.clearwire. net select the about us link.

I have a Golden Retriever and she is the best dog I personally have ever had. I have had at least 10 dogs in my lifetime, and she is the smartest, friendliest, and most playful with my kids. We couldn't have asked for a better dog !!!
