Yes, this is not an ideal world so it would be good to have some sort of self defense. Not only for women, but for men, too. You can try to learn some sort of hand-to-hand (or foot!) combat art or learn to shoot a gun or even keep a pepper spray or a stun gun! Depends on your preference.

Pinch the skin on the back of their upper arm.
Knee to groin.
Use keys, handbags, hair spray anything you can find.

Getting sprayed in the eye with some hair spray will give you the time to escape.

The main thing, if you want to learn, is either start a martial art (Probably not the way to go, unless you have an interest, since you'll cover things you don't need) or go to a womens self defense class. They'll teach you the effective stuff, to let you escape.

What will be the difference between women self defence and the normal self defence which men and women do?

Will the women version of self defence be about attacking those 'male' areas? If so, be careful because you can get into serious trouble when hitting people in 'certain' places. It is illegal, and may turn out for the worst even if it was self defence.

Self defence is more than that, and having one for women is a bit silly.

These 'self defence' tactics, are a combination of grappling skills and striking skills. Most are more basic fundamentals than advanced techniques. In order to truely defend yourself you need to break past those fundamentals and learn how to wrestle. With the wrestling, include techniques of punching also. You need to know how to control your opponent (attacker) and to be abe to run away when the opportunity rises.

I have seen many self defence classes and they do give people a false impression of looking after themselves. You must know to do more than the basic mechanics or reversing certain moves or using your palm to hit certain points, etc.

What will 'self defence for women' benefit? Will it make a women able to truely defend herself from a real attacker? Probably not!! It takes more than self defence classes to truely know how to defend!!

At the end of the day, what will a 'self defence class for women' benefit from an ordinary self defence class (apart from just having women of course)?

Of course. It's a great way to get fit and you will learn alot of moves to protect yourself if you need to. You should try Taekwondo. I personally think that its the best martial art because you do alot of everything. - not only your arms, but it focuses more on your legs so that you can have a variety of different kicks that you can learn and you can find the one thats your best and strongest one to use later on. Also, not only attacking moves, but also defensive moves are taught and you can also learn to have self-dicipline and a peace of mind. You can enter competitions later on for patterns or fighting so that you can practise the moves and you can earn rewards which is something to strive for. The coloured belts as well that you can earn which will keep you motivated at it for years.

Self defense classes? Mostly for self confidence. But we're often quicker than men. And a Q -tip at 400 miles per hour will penetrate a skull. So it may work for you.
Why don't you look into mace. And carry it boldly (easy to use).

The best art for women is brazilian jiu jitsu. It is based on technique and leverage and NOT on strength. It's also EXTREMELY effective in a rape situation.

If you choose a striking art like karate, you're still at a huge disadvantage against a man. When it comes to striking, the bigger person ALWAYS has the advantage.

Good luck in whatever you choose!

Most effective ? I think for an average female - size, strength, fitness etc. Aikido is a very good art - can be anything you want it to be depending on your committment. Very effective for evasion and control - includes 'atemi' vital point strikes if required. Very subtle or very destructive - depending on situation. Takes a while to get reasonably competent though. Can incorporate most other arts in its structure - even good old brawling as a backup - but, with more awareness. pete

it's a great idea. and many more woman and the younger lteens should also take it up. there are a lot of god martials arts around. not forgeting the none martials arts. like kickboxing. my-self a 3rd dan black belt. and there are a good few self-defence courses around. but be awere of them. no often they are run by martial artsis. that are just looking to make a few quid. (not all) just some

but if you are looking at just defence and counter attack. try a six to 10 week course. or try kickboxing. good luck. and take care.
