Unfortunately for too many people, commercialism is the reason for the season. The first link below is a blog entry I wrote last year challenging people to give up giving and getting presents and to help ministries and charities as well. I got a ton of response from this, mostly good. I hope it will make people think again this year.

I'm wherever Jesus is welcome. When merchants began promoting "Happy Holidays" instead of the traditional "Merry Christmas", we immediately stopped shopping for Christmas and got involved in a huge and growing effort to avoid the "present" thing altogether. That began with all our family we could reach, friends, churches. The money and time saved have been diverted to ministries. Stores are begging back old business, or they might fail this year. Sorry. Their motive is only money while still trying to cash in on a holiday they are letting sweep away. The parking lots around almost all except Wal Mart are always quite empty, and the usual temporary workers are not being hired. We support businesses that are not ashamed of Jesus, and they are doing good business, but are not merchants of "stuff" for presents. Isn't it interesting that Christmas was once so popular with a "natural" event of season shopping by supposedly a majority being Christians, bringing a boon to stores, but since Jesus began being omitted, there is much failure? I think there will be a flood of closed stores and rise in unemployment soon after a very lean Christmas. Several of the major department stores are already doing clearance sales, the shelves not being restocked. Grocers are cutting back on variety, like one brand of peanut butter, saltines, canned fruit, etc. Not looking so good for those not having blessing from God.

i have read it. so why does everyone forget what the real reason is about? its not about commercialism and materialism. its not about fighting for a toy. its not about trampling people at the dept store to be the one of the first 10. being agnostic, i do not believe in jesus or any god but i do believe that people should be willing to give unto each other on a daily basis and not just around the holidays. underprivelged families go hungry year round not just at thanksgiving and xmas. i dont see any of these so called christians stepping up on the fourth of july to adopt a homeless family. the reason for the season is to make money. not celebrate the birth of jesus. we need to get back to caring for each other all the time, not just during the holidays.

I can't believe it is almost here too, it does seem like only 6 months ago! I have not read the poem so if you find it, can you please email it to me?
In our house we don't get into all the commercialization of Christmas, we celebrate Jesus, and I think that would be a good addition for my kids.

Poem or no poem, true Christians have no part of Christmas with its pagan roots. Jesus commanded his followers to celebrate his death, not his birthday, which, by the way, is not on December 25th.

The Winter Solstice is the Reason for the Season.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

Christmas is a Pagan celebration that Christians have hijacked. Nothing more, nothing less.
