Yes, the warm steamy air helps to loosen congestion in the chest so you can cough it up to clear your lungs. How often you do it depends on how well it makes you feel (normally about 3 or 4 times a day). Be careful not to cover yourself up too well with a towel over your head as you don't want to singe either your face or your lungs.

I always found that it did. I didn't stand over the boiling water though. I was too afraid of getting burnt by the steam. What I would do is pour the boiling water into a safe bowl, add a teaspoon of Vicks Vapor Rub to the water then drape a towel over my head and lean over the water to breath in the steam and vapors. It would cause me to cough, but it was a productive cough, bringing up gunk. Afterwards, I could always breath easier. I did it once or twice a day. I told my doctor what I was doing and he said it would not hurt and could do some good as it would thin out the mucus in my lungs and make it easier to bring it up as well as open the bronchial passages. But I would suggest you ask your doctor before attempting any home remedies. Good luck and good health.

They used to think that was one of the best remedies, or turning on the hot shower full blast with the door closed. But now they recommend highly that a person dressing up as warm as possible and going outside in the cool fresh air, and deeply inhaling the mist into the lungs. Small children should be treated the same way. Do this as often as needed. Using a humidifier is also a good remedy. Gargling with warm salt is also good. Salt water acts like a natural antibiotic. Good luck!

Sit in the bathroom with the door closed and the shower running on hot, better yet a humidifier in your bedroom with the door closed, steam helps any chest infection immensely.
