Greyhounds are used for track racing, Whippets are used for track racing and lure coursing.
Currently the breeds commonly accepted at North American lure coursing
events are:
* Afghan Hounds
* Basenjis
* Borzoi
* Greyhounds
* Irish Wolfhounds
* Ibizan Hounds
* Pharoah Hounds
* Salukis
* Scottish Deerhounds
* Rhodesian Ridgebacks
* Whippets
Several of the husky breeds are used for sled racing..

The only professional type racing, with betting, in the US, is the greyhound. The sled dog types do run for money purses in some of their races. Whippets have NO professional racing or money purses but amateur racing (dogs go home & sleep on the bottom of the bed) does exist for both whippets and all the sighthound breeds chetco mentioned. Lure cousing is running but is not a tecniclly a race- they are judged on style. There is also amateur racing with various degrees of orginization for weiner dogs, coon hounds, Jack russells, chichias and one budding orginization that take all dogs.

Greyhounds and a greyhounds' smaller cousin called a Whippet. They look just like a greyhound but smaller.

greyhounds and they are not treated well. they are pumped with steroids and other service enhancing drugs to make them fast. it affects their kidneys and liver, their metabolism and after they are done with their racing 'career' they are put to sleep. greyhound rescue is a great organization but cant save them all.

mainly greyhounds.but sometimes,whippets,(a smaller cousin of greyhounds)are also used
