or if your dog has had pups before what age was she?

The general concencus is that seven to eight years old is the maximum age to deliberately mate a dog with a view to pups. It would be sensible to consider all factors though, overall health, whether she has had previous litter and so on. The advice of your vet would be an advantage, bear in mind that he is unlikely to recommend it after a certain age anyway, probably seven, but he may identify risk factors that we may not think of. Then you could make a decision. If you dog is getting on a bit, there could be complications which would be very expensive-I don't mean to sound mercenary but this is something to consider if the finances aren't up to scratch at the moment! I do wish you luck if you decide everything is favourable, and I would like to add that I think you are very wise to ask for people's opinions. Thoughtless souls just go ahead on a whim and let themselves into all sorts of trouble, not to mention the most important factor, the well-being of a much-loved dog. I wish you a long and happy relationship with her-whatever you decide!

When consulting a Siberian Husky breeder some 10 years ago, his standards were to not breed until the age of 2, then each female only had 3 litters, 1 a year, until the age of 6. Then he would spay his females and retire them from breeding.

I don't know if going over 6 yrs is really a good idea or not, but I know that personally, I liked the standards that breeder had set and if I were ever going to breed, those would be my guidelines to follow.

they shouldn't have their first litter before 2 years old, or after 6 years old.. If she has had a litter, she will be likely to do OK until she is 8...Less if she is a giant breed.

by the time a dog is 6, if she hasn't had a litter before, she will likely need a C-section, as her pelvic bones are not stretchy enough to allow the birth of puppies..

prime is 18 months to about 4 or 5 years, dogs will have pups at over ten but its same as humans its high risk and punshes the dog, you must remember bitchs do everything for there pups and will willingly die to feed and protect them so so if she over six its almost cruel to allow her to carry full term
