I think the most painful thing we can do is to examine our religous beliefs. If we're wrong, the possibilities of what we can lose are huge: eternal life, our moral code, our families. So there's a lot to KEEP and very little to "gain" by all appearances.
Some of us say "an unexamined life is not worth living" however. I'm in that club. And if GOD is really god, he can stand a little bit of exploration. Pretty flimsy diety if he can't even be examined.

Actually, not every religious people thinks their beliefs are right. Here where I live, a lot of muslims including the Uztads (leaders of the Muslims) become Christians bcoz they realize it for their own. U c, long time ago, most of the people is searching for a leader n they search for the God. But since we can't do anything about it, some of them thought that things (like trees and other plants, statues and human) r God. But for me, there's only one God. The all powerful God. The God who created me n I'm not ashamed for I belief in Him 100%. The reason is bcoz He gave us a lot of miraculous signs. He even let some Christians see what's going to happen in the future.
One of the miraculos signs is when one of the pastors in Indonesia saw the future. He saw the picture of a bom exploding in Bali. After a few months, it realy happened!!!
Another one is about a woman who was showed by God what Hell is like and what Heaven is like.
By the way, once before, my Best Friend saw how Hell is like. She said that it's very scary and there was the lake of fire. Not like the regular fire, the fire she saw was like lightning. At the same day, almost every girl in her class saw what's going o happen in the future. Some of them even saw Satan going out through the window of the room where we were worshiping God.
Oh, n one more thing... To know more, try reading the Bible. It won't hurt n it's up to u to believe or not.
God Bless u!

They have created a world based on a faith. It is not belief like a rational person forms a belief. It is a complete paradigm. If it collapses they have nothing to fall back on and no coping strategy. They can not afford to be wrong and even the thought of the possibility drives terror deep through them. If they were wrong they would need to face the reality of death and all of the responsibility that means for living. Scary as it is I still feel sorry for them. And I will continue my efforts to set them free of fear.

I could be wrong. I have no problem admitting that.
But for many believers in religions, they think there is something somehow wrong with admitting that. They think they are supposed to have a certainty about their beliefs. Some Christians for example think that salvation is based wholly on belief, and therefore, their salvation would be called into question if there was any doubt. So they dare not have any doubts, or at least not admit to it.

Who wants to admit that something they have believed in is wrong? Also, some beliefs give people hope of a wonderful afterlife, a chance to be forgiven of mistakes, and the knowledge that a God loves them. What is the alternative?

I think it is human nature. People will often have doubts about haircuts and then convinced themselves that they were right all along. few will admit that their new doo is gruesome.
and since so many relgions have the concequences for non-belief being so high .. eternal damnation or oblivion.. that many then feel that their faith is not faithful enough if there is room for doubt.
and that there is fear, that if we are wrong, and they are right and I have not been following this other thing .. then again I am doomed.
too much gloom and doom.
I hope god is not like that. I suppose that he/she/it could be.

The answer you are looking for is in your question. They don't think that their beliefs could be wrong simply because they ARE religious.
They believe in God. They believe that he exist. And they have been believing so since they are born. How do you really expect them to react if you tell them that God doesn't exist. It's like telling a kid of 3 years old that father christmas don't exist!

Excellent question!
The unwillingness to maintain an open mind, is confusing to those of us who choose to consider possibilities. It becomes extremely confusing, when the facts are that the religion or church itself has changed it's rules or ideas over time.....and yet the people who follow their chosen religious teachers, will only change if the are told it is okay?? It makes no sense. Or maybe it does...and I have much to learn?

Why question something real in my life? This isn't the latest fad I'm following. I had a real experience with God and Jesus coming into my life and he radically changed me, I don't doubt the Bible and who the author and finisher of my faith is.
