I won't use any anti-bark collars that cause electric shocck or ultrasouds, but what about some collars that spray citronella? Do they work? And are they as humane as they sound?

I do know why he barks, he barks at other dogs. And he knows it is not right, because when I go outside ans shhh him he stops, and he doesn't do it because he is outside, because the door is open, I let him in, but he prefers to run outside to bark at other dogs!

They suck. No, they aren't as humane as you'd think because the citronella can be irritating or even cause allergic reactions in some dogs.
Your best bet is to find out why he barks (boredom, loneliness, "alerting", etc.) and address that issue.

I have heard that they have caused cataracts..as the spray damages the eyes.
I do recommend the sonic collars.. they don't traumatize the dog, and I haven't seen any problems later..
They simply make a high pitched buzz when the dog barks the 3rd time, and the sound increases with each 2 barks...they will still bark when warning of strangers..
I have used them on rescues, who were incessant barkers, and have loaned mine to others, all with good success... they only need to wear them a few days..

While they will work initially, the dog will soon get accustomed to it, know when the collar is on or off, and will figure out ways around it. Also, the long term affects of these collars have not been tested. Instead of dealing with the collar, train to deal with the barking. Basic obedience classes will help get the dog out around other dogs and people, which typically will get the dog barking. The instructors can work with you to teach the dog to not bark when you don't want them to.

They are perfectly humane but if you have an intense barker like mine dont get one! You have to buy refill bottles that generally cost $10 - $18 a piece that you have to refill about every 15 - 20 mins! They hold enough spray for 30 barks at one time, think about that! That means when they go ruff ruff ruff ruff ruff ruff ruff ruff ruff! Thats half of the container! If you have an intense barker like mine you will be broke before they are even half trianed! Consider professional trianers! Try BarkBusters they are the only solution that ever worked for me when everything else failed! Plus they have a lifetime guarantee! They will even come to your house to work with your dog one on one! Check them out!

i understand your problem. some dogs are barkers, and some are not so much. if you love your dog, work with him/her, and there are few - if any other behavior problems, you are doing nothing wrong. ignore those who say that you are!!!
i am going to be trying one of the ultrasonic or whatever ones soon with my shar pei. she is a great dog, but her barking is quite constant. i haven't owned her since she was a puppy...actually, i have just gotten her, and she is about 4 years old, so i can't go back and work on that problem from the beginning. my understanding is that the sonic collars can be helpful, though!

they are humane, but most dogs learn to outsmart them or if they have a lot of skin it doesn't stay in one place therefore spraying into thin air
