Three ladies go to a restaurant for a meal. They receive a bill for $30. They each put $10 on the table, which the waiter collects and takes to the till. The cashier informs the waiter that the bill should only have been for $25 and returns $5 to the waiter in $1 coins. On the way back to the table the waiter realizes that he cannot divide the coins equally between the ladies. As they didn’t know the total of the revised bill, he decides to put $2 in his own pocket and give each of the ladies $1.

Now that each lady has been given a dollar back, each of the ladies has paid $9. Three times 9 is 27. The waiter has $2 in his pocket. Two plus 27 is $29. The ladies originally handed over $30. Where is the missing dollar?

theres no missing dollar, cause, if there was 3 ladies, each paid 9 dollars, 9 *3 =27, the guy kept 2, so theres 25, and 27 + 3= 30, cause he gave the ladies one dollar each

$9 x 3 = $27

The three ladies spent $27. $25 to the restaurant and $2 to the waiter.

After they got the $1 back each, they now only spent $27, not $30.

Have a great day!

Well you see. The $2 that the waiter stole was from the $ 27 they paid.

$25(Price of bill) + $5(amount returned by manager) = $30
$25 + [$2(amount poceted by waiter) + $3(amount returned to the ladies)] = $30

they actually spent $27, $25 for the meal plus $2 to the waiter;

they paid $30;

they got back $3 = $30 - $27 - cool !

25 + 3 +2 =30
3(9) +3 =30
look at it the way you like ! the waiter's $2 are part of the $27 so you add $27 to $3 change
OR add the total costs $25[for bill] + $3[change] + $2[taken by waiter]

Good question. It called a mathematical impossibility. Maths should work exactly both ways, however if you changed the way you said it , saying the meal cost $25. each lady got $1. and the waiter stole $2. then it does work
