The fact that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had so many wives and also the fact that he kept concubines doesn't augur with me well.
You'll find a lot of polemic in this regard that are being offered by "devout" Muslims. But when they argue in the Prophet's favour their hollowness is exposed.
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) also 'eyed' infant girls, Ayesha being one of them. Now, the polemic being offered by Muslims in this context is that it was the father of Ayesha, Abu Bakkar Siddique who urged the prophet to marry his daughter. But then my point is that the noble prophet could have politely declined the offer.
Another polemic that is being offered by Islamic scholars is that during those days marriage of 9-10 year old girls was very common. But they very cleverly neglect to mention that 9-10 year old girls are given in marriage only to young boys which suit their age.
As a Muslim I must confess that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has set a very bad precedent. No wonder, "devout" Muslims will always reveal their bias on the topic which you mentioned. But I'm not one of them!!!!

If you read that, then I suggest you read about the other Prophets (May God have mercy on them all) as well. Solomon had 1000 wives. Abraham had two wives (and YES Hagar was his wife; it is recorded in both the Torah and in the Qur'an). And that is just two examples.
Having many wives is not a priviledge to anyone, prophet or not. It is a responsibility. Westerners fail to see this, since they focus on myths and fairytales of so-called Harems (which do not exist).
When in the west, a man has a mistress hidden from his wife (he can even have a whole family from this mistress, that never get any rights or even the honor of being recognized as his children, by society!), in Islam (and up until the 1500s, in Judaism as well - Yemenite Jews can to this day have two wives if they live in the Middle East, it is an exception made by the Jewish Courts in the west; I know this from meeting with Yemenite Jewish wives and co-wives) a man does not have to hide any woman. To the benefit of everyone, the first wife has rights on him (he must support her and her children and give them a good home), and the co-wives (one or up to three) have the same rights as the first wife.
And the point that almost nobody in the west seems to know: No Muslim man can marry one more woman, unless he can prove that he CAN support them financially, emotionally and materially. This is in Islamic Law.
Ladies: what would you rather be? A mistress or a wife? What would you rather have? No name on the birth certificate of your child, or your own home and children with a known father on every legal paper?

It needs details actually but I try to summarised it for you. Muslims may have four wives at a time but can marry as many as he want with justification. For example one has four wives, after time one them dies or divorced he can have another one as fourth but he can not have five at a time.
BUT Quran says, you (male muslims) can have one or two or three or four wives but if you think you can not make justice among them stop at one. The restricting factor is the justice among the wives and islam does not allow a man to do anything unfair.
The case of prophet (peace be upon him) was different. Allah the Almighty allowed him to have more than four wives at a time but restricted him not to do more even if one dies or separated.
As I said it needs much detail but I think I am able to give you some bold points.
Allah the Almighty know well.

I wouldnt know because the Quran doesnt say that...but it does say how happy the wives were and treated very well. Muslim men were allowed to have 4 wives because a lot of women were alone and helpless to support themselves or their children after wars and to save them from lives of indecent acts they were married.

The Prophet Muhammad took many wives not for selfish reasons, but to help them out, because an unmarried woman in that society back then was in danger, without a protector. So he was actually helping them out, and that's why he was allowed to do this.

In fact , first love for Prophet Muhammad was God (Allah) but marriage is a Islamic duty, Prophet Muhammad also loved his first wife" Khadija" he much respect her and loved her she was elder than him after she died prophet Muhammad was crying whenever he remembered her, he never married until she was alived .
Then after "Khadija" Fisrt Lady of Islam died he marriaged to many widows who had no guardian.
I think he did that since he didn't want to spend and care all of his time with one wife because he didn't want to forgot his dear wife"khadija".
