Some people like extremely high-definition TV, some people like just standard and it's fine for them. Go to a store that has a blu-ray player playing and then see another that has a 720p playing. If you notice a difference, get the 1080p.

I don't think they'll be broadcasting 1080p on TVs for another five years, if you want my estimate.

It will be a long, long time (if ever), since the picture quality improvement is not considered worth the added bandwidth required. Deinterlacing can give very good results, so get 1080p if you possibly can.
