If every rule has an exception, then there must be an exception to the rule that every rule has an exception. so does any rule have no exception?

MAYBE...you're good at these trick questions. Then there must be rule with an exception but at the same time time there musn't.

This isn't really a paradox but is included to point out the inherent inconsistency in the statement. Suppose the statement is true, then:

1. Every rule has an exception.

2. Statement 1. is a rule.

3. Therefore statement 1. has an exception.

4. Therefore every rule does not have an exception.



While the inconsistency of the phrase "every rule has an exception" may not appear to be of importance it does in fact serve to illustrate the problems that can arise when a statement makes reference to itself. A further, and more disturbing from the mathematical point of view, example of this kind of difficulty is given in the paradox which claims to prove that every number can be described in twelve words or less.

The rule "Every rule has an exception" has the exception that says that "There is no exception to this rule" !

Every rule has an exception is a corrolary to a rule and not a rule itself. Thus, your little game of circulus improbondo is thwarted, a corollary has no exception it is an exception.

no rule is without exception. it is the exceptions which make the rule a rule.
