XP Pro 64 bit is aimed primarily at developers. It has some driver issues. I should say that not all vendors created dirvers for their products to work in the 64 bit OS. As far as Vista, I wouldn't jump on the bandwagon very early. Microsoft has a tendency too release an OS a little early. Let others deal with the initial problems and move to Vista in a year or so. I would suggest you stick with XP Home for now.

Stick with Home for the moment. 64-bit XP has a lot of driver issues and is aimed at developers, not your average consumer. as for upgrading in general, Vista has very high system requirements, so if you're going to be upgrading to Vista, you'll most likely need to upgrade your hardware as well, 64-bit CPU or not.
I recommend that you wait until Vista comes out before you upgrade at all, and until then save your money and possibly get a new machine with Vista preloaded. Also, wait a while before getting Vista, as Microsoft has a history of releasing its OS's much too ealry, with various security issues and so on requiring patches, Service Packs, and the such to be downloaded.

You could "dual boot" with XP whatever and Vista, so that you can still run programs that may have compatibility issues with Vista (if there are any). Before the computer starts up it'll ask you if you want to load the XP OS or the Vista OS.
I've never done this before so I don't know how it works, but it is definitely something you can do. Maybe you can have XP on one hard drive and have Vista on another hard drive ($$$).

Mate ... there isn't much that works with 64Bit XP (many driver problems) and I think there will be even less that works with Vista (in the short term anyway) so for now stick with good old fashioned 32Bit XP and wait untill component manufacturers catch up with sound and graphics card drivers and they get all the teething troubles and (you know theres gonna be some) bugs ironed out of Vista

microsoft has not announced a formal free-vista-upgrade program yet.
It is estimated that computers sold from Jan '07 will have Vista pre-installed. Some makers will offer free-upgrade coupons to customers purchasing PCs in December '06.
Computer buyers in Oct/Nov will have to pay upgrade prices for Vista.

there may be an answer to your issues that would not contain an entire recession to a lesser, or maybe diverse in any respect, OS. there's a multi-gadget emulator obtainable which will allow you to run maximum classes below XP, and nevertheless save Vista via fact the universal hardware gadget, so which you gained;t lose something or might desire to do away with and re-config or substitute RAM sticks, complicated drives, or the rest. Get a replica oif "digital laptop 2007" from the Micorsoft internet site, and deploy it. it extremely is beginning grew to become into for telephone-based Tech help and it covers from XP backwards to Win ninety 5, as an emulator for each of them abruptly. it is going to allow you to apply a hardware-emulated XP like minded gadget putting for many XP utility, and as few OS issues as obtainable, and since the hardware is emulated, there are no non-like minded MSHCL matters. It additionally skill you ought to use the finished velocity of Your gadget RAM to run the emulator too, and any prolonged photographs and media features of Vista for gaming, and so on.. I additionally advise this to those who're asking approximately installation a twin-boot device, via fact it extremely is relatively a similar concern yet enables switching between OS variations without a reboot, and get entry to to complicated drives and NTFS folders from any OS. FYI : I study that as quickly as i grew to become into looking into it, a version of Win ME wasn't coated, and that i've got faith that the only, 2 variations of domicile windows mandatory for an old-schooler like myself are XP professional and ME - via old DOS video games {I honestly have} and ME being the final standalone DOS version of domicile windows - DOS 6.22. stable success!.
