In order to get a tattoo on your own, you have to be at least 18, though I know a few places that require 21+
As far as needing permission, this is a touchy thing. I know of a handful of studios that WILL NEVER tattoo anyone under 18 (legal age). Even with permission, the tattoo parlors have the right to say no. Generally, if you are 16 or 17 and do into the shop WITH your parent/legal guardian present they will allow you to be pierced or tattooed. Both of you will have to show ID.
Any place that just accepts a note, any place that accepts a friend to give permission or any place quick to take a bribe to tattoo/pierce a minor should not be trusted.

16 with parental consent and supervision. 18 without. Before you get a tattoo.... just remember whatever you get will be there for the rest of your life. be sure it is something that means something to you.

Well I was 18 when I got my first tattoo. Call Shaw's down on Montrose and ask them. They have been there for ages. They also do excellent work.

18 without permission any younger and your parents have to be there.please dont let your friends do any makeshift (homemade) tats that you will regret later or end up looking trashy.ps im in tx
