how can i find out if this panting i have is worth anything..

Take it to an Art Evaluator.
Check with your local Bank, they'll guide you.

Check the signature and date and go online to see if the name comes up. If not, the painting is worth what you paid for it or can sell it for. If the name appears, check the entries and find prices, If substantial, take the painting to an appraiser (check online for names). You may have to pay a few hundred bucks but if you already know the artist is selling at good prices, it will be worth his documentation when time comes to sell it
