Cops can pull you over if the method is truly random, i.e. every 8th car. They may not pull you over if its weighted random, i.e. every white car. You would need to observed all of the cars pulled over at that speedtrap or checkpoint to determine which is the case. When you sign a ticket you are not admitting guilt, rather acknowledging that you recieved the ticket. If you wouldnt sign the ticket, they must take you to the station to show the judge that you did indeed get the ticket. Your best bet would be to take any of these cases before a judge. You would also want to bring in a picture of the pothole as evidentce, and just relax, be honest and tell your story. Act calm in front of the judge and address him with respect and the dignity his robes deserve. If you are disrespectful or argumentative, he will find it much easier to side with the police officer.

RE:
Why can you be pulled over for no reason?
Why can cops pull you over for no reason given? I thought I had heard that they have to give you a reason. But when I say this to them, they will say that they are checking people on a random basis.
Also, why can they say whatever they want and give you a ticket that you have to sign and take or...

I totally agree with you. I was driving thru a "bad part of town" according to the cop who pulled me over. He searched the car and me. He asked what I was doing and I told him I was taking a short cut which was the truth. He asked how it was a short cut and I told him there weren't any stoplights. Then another cop pulled up (to help out)asked the same question then asked the same follow-up question. After answering both times, they told me it wasn't a short cut. They said the only reason people went thru this area was for drugs or hookers. I thought the people who lived in this area might think otherwise as they were travelling home or to a friends. I understood that it was a case of white boy in a black area. I wonder what would happen if I started dating a girl from this area. I would probably get pulled over the same as you and on a regular basis too. The whole swerving thing and the person who said you were is a load of crap. Of course you were but not because you were drunk. If you take a picture of the pothole and make sure they can see landmarks in the picture from that area, or take several pictures and take it to court, they should drop the ticket. The good thing is judges are usually good about making cops write good tickets not BS ones. I got a ticket for not yielding coming out of private drive and the judge threw it out. So make the cops write good tickets, fight the tickets if you have to. Don't let them bully you cuz they will if you let them!

Who's the jackass? Wait until your a dead body in the middle of the highway because you got ejected out of your driver seat because your seatbelt wasnt fastened or until you go to the funeral of your buddy that was in the passanger seat who became one with the windshield after you lost control and hit a tree. I guarantee you that every time you get into your car you say to yourself "i should put on my seatbelt so I dont get pulled over by another jackass".....well jackass or not, that cops actions may save your life along with your buddies in your car. Also, what else were you doing that you got pulled over? I guarantee you that his probable cause to pull you over wasnt because you werent wearing your seatbelt. You're just another punk kid with no respect for authority. God I dread dealing with immature kids like you. Do you see how many people DISAGREE with your opinion? Do you think that just a coincidence?

A police officer must have some reason to conduct a traffic stop. It can be for a traffic violation, because the vehicle/occupant matches the description of a vehicle/suspect they are looking for, or occassionally as part of a DUI or Driver's License checkpoint. If they tell you they are peforming a check of random people, they must be able to show that it is part of the DUI or Driver's License checkpoint, or you might have cause for legal action.
The second part of your question is a bit more complicated. When a police officer issues you a ticket, by signing that ticket, you are NOT admitting guilt or agreement with what is on the ticket. By signing, you are posting what is called a "signature bond", which is an agreement to either pay the ticket or to go to court and fight the ticket. By not signing the ticket, you are in effect refusing to give a promise to show up in court. If you don't give your promise by signing, you must post some other type of bond. Many states allow the officer to take your driver's license as a bond if you refuse to sign. But they also allow the officer to arrest you and take you to jail if you refuse to sign. When you go to jail, you will have to post a monetary bond, by paying to get out.
Basically, when the officer writes a ticket, you have to give a promise to go to court, wheter it's by signing the ticket from your car or paying cash from a jail cell is up to you.
The reason the police can do it that way is because the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that any violation of the law, even a minor traffic violation, is an arrestable offense. So it's already been taken all the way, and declared legal.

The police can pull you over for no reason ( ha ha ha) they always have a reason, maybe not a legal reason but they make one up if they need one. If you are being pulled over so much maybe you should look into how you drive. Could be you are not a safe driver. AND if you read the ticket it states that your signature is not an admission of guilt but, is acknowledgment of receipt. Pay attention and drive safe. Best of luck to you.

Ok, if you have been stoped 30 times, they susupect you of someting, plain and simple, Most people don't get stoped more than 4 times thier entire life.
Next they had a reasons to pull you over, to you they may be fake but the officer had a reason and basicly it would be your word against theirs that it happened, and the judge most likely would not beleve you.
NextYes you don't have a choice, you have to take the ticket, you can argure or fight it in court. If you refuse to sign the ticket ( a ticket is only a summons to appear in court. Often they give you the option of pleading guilty by mail and paying a fine. If you don't sign the summons, they have no choice but to take you to the police station and allow you to post bail instead of signing the ticket
So I would say you need to take a deep look at your life and what you are doing, or who you are with, to be stoped that many times, something else is happening

Laws and directives regarding the actions of police officers vary from state to state and city to city. Ideally an officer is suppose to inform the traffic violator the reason why he/she was stopped. You may want to consider going to court and contest any citation you feel that you received unjustly. If you are stopped in the future by an officer and aren't told why you were stopped you should file a conplaint in person at the police headquarters. Carry a voice activated record with you to record your evidence too.

It happens for different reasons. All of them are against the basic ethics of the legal system. You need some witnesses to back you up in court. However if you didn't come to a "complete" stop they can use that as a reason for giving you a ticket. That means your wheels have to stop revolving completely. When they don't it can be considered to be a "rolling" stop. How ever you might be getting stopped because of the car you are driving. If it is the same make/color as one some known criminal drives, it will sure have them zero in on you. The worse case is that some unscrupulous cops are stopping you because you are a young female. It happens. If that is the case you have a sexual harassment case against them. I suggest you take a picture of the pothole and show it to the judge in court. He'll probably throw the ticket out. If not hit the pot hole next time and if your tire bust's you can get a lawyer to sue the city.
