Well the purpose for that is to keep the pests off the bark and leaves, like ants caterpillars etc. but its not paint it is a powdery substance that is like baking soda or something of that sort. I grew up on a farm my Father used to put in on his apple trees.

To protect the tree trunk from damage and reflects the sun; a procedure some farmers use on their trees. Around here sometimes I see Walnut trees with the trunks painted white. I live in beautiful California that has the richest soil in the world and where agriculture still goes on.

What you refer to is "white wash". It is not a paint but simply a mixture of lime and water. Originally trees were painted with white wash as a means of discouraging certain insects. Now it is done mostly for decoration. It is still done extensively in the deep South.

if they are along the street or driveway its so people can see them better in the headlights and not hit them, also some insect control stuff was white paint like,
