Aside from taking the plane, how else can i go to New York City from Durham, N. Carolina? Is there a bus or a train which travels vice versa? Thanks!

There must be a train or a bus, but it will take for freaking ever. A train ride from Lynchburg VA to Wilmington DE - less distance than Durham to NYC - takes about 6 hours. You can drive it in that time. Maybe a bus would be even faster, but I'll bet it still takes 10 hours.

By train, you have two options on Amtrak. Either you take Route 80 (Carolinian) all the way from Durham to New York, or you take the same Route 80 to Washington and change there to Route 66 (Regional Service). The trip lasts not less than ten hours and a half.
By bus, the trip should take between 11.5-13 hours. It involves taking Carolina Trailways Bus to either Raleigh or Richmond (VA) and change to a Greyhound bus to New York.
Driving the car, the trip should take a little more than eight hours.
If the plane is still one of your options, then you need to know that the trip is about one and a half hour long. Airlines serving direct routes from Raleigh-Durham Airport (RDU) are American (AA), Continental (CO), Delta (DL), Jetblue (B6), United (UA) and US Airways (US). American can also get you from Raleigh-Durham ro New York through Washington (WAS). Continental provides alternative connecting services through Norfolk (ORF). Delta connects also through Norfolk or Pittsburgh (PIT). United offers connections through Philadelphia (PHL), Pittsburgh or Washington. US Airways provides connections through Norfolk, Philadephia, Pittsburgh or Washington.

Grayhound or Amtrak, but why wouldn't you fly.

These days, plane fares are about the same as bus and rail and quicker.

See a travel agent for tips and advise on which is better for you.

You should go directly to the websites and see the schedules to determine length and cost.
