I remember them during my high school and college days (1980s). That company originated in France. They made some damn good road bikes at the time. But, when mountain bikes became all the rage, Motobecane and MANY other bicycle manufacturers dropped off the US market. Even many Japanese, Italian, and US brands vanished.
Try the Motobecane name in some search engines and see if you come up with anything. That should be interesting.

They are a mass market bike. Motiv uses low end componentry and the frames are heavy. They are not suited to any aggressive off road riding and won't handle the abuse. If you get the bike already assembled, get a set of metric allen wrenches and check all the bolts to make sure they are tight. Better check the cranks (usally a 14mm socket or 8mm allen wrench) as well as the pedals. I have run across too many mass market bikes that have had something loose or had poor shifting/braking. A bike shop can probably put you on something for about $240 or so. It won't have all the latest & greatest things, but it will at least be built by somebody who knows what they are doing (and be better quality overall). Most shops also offer some type of a maintenance service with the bike (a free tune up or something like that).

I would call Motobecane an "off-brand" company. They don't have a wide distribution or marketing program like the big names. The big difference between that bike and another name-brand bike is the frame. Now, is the frame that much different than a Trek, Specialized, Giant, etc? Maybe not. I know someone with a Motobecane and he is very happy with it. The bad part about Motobecane is that usually you don't get to try the bike out before you get to ride it.

Just because it's on eBay doesn't mean it's a bad bike. I think you'll find that motobecane is fairly good bike made by a smaller company.

Like most bicycle manufactures they have there low end bikes for the individual who doesn't want to spend alot of money and time riding, to the high end stuff ( steel or carbon fiber ) for the enthusiast who has to have all the best and will ride two or three hundred miles a week. It all depends on how much money you want to invest.

Use the website you added and judge for yourself, Ultegra, Dura Ace, 105, components are the same on there bikes as on the Trek Madones.

If your thinking of buying I don't think you'd go wrong.

I know this brand was around back in the 1970s.
Don't know for sure, but I think it was a decent brand at the time ... not high-end, but not junk either.

Low cost means low quality...These bikes are bottom end...I'd look for a nice used bike first...You get what you pay for...
