My husband works with a former special forces operative and other than having some really, really interesting stories about the life he's led he's just like anybody else.

I think you have to look at him/her as an individual and if they are someone that you'd want to be friends with. What this person did for a living prior to being hired at the same company you work for shouldn't shape how you treat them, at least I don't think so. It's not like being a special forces op screws you up. They have special military training, that's all. I give them alot of credit for having the abilities to do the job they do!

"don't judge the book by it's cover" oldest quote which can be applied here

if he is part of the special forces, try not to do anything that will startle or surprise him/her. some of them or maybe all of them are trained to do things that will protect them and hurt the people posing a threat.

try to get to know him first before jumping to conclusions

You do what you would normally do for any new hire.

You introduce yourself and offer to help if they ever need it and play it by ear. This person may not want alot of attention and then he/she may enjoy sharing their many experiences.

*personally, I would find it facinating.

What would the job be he was hired for?

If he were to be a Librarian then I think to be distant would be a safe move.

I would be interested in learning of his experiences and his perspective on the international situation, so I would be included to spend time with him.
