A lot of redness and warm to the touch, pussy secretions (I'm sorry I know it sounds gross!), these would be the first tell tale signs. I would apply peroxide and alcohol with a cotton ball numerous times during the day along with moving, rotating your jewelry. If things do not heal up within a few days, remove the jewelry and ck with your doctor. You may have an allergic reaction the metal ....

pus, crusty, it will be pink or red around area where infection is, it will hurt really bad to touch area or move the ring, but just remember pus, crust, and alittle pink is also the sign of your body healing from the new wound also, keep washing it with antibacterial soap and see if in a few days it doesnt get better.
