By helping people see themselves as they are...
...and as God wants them to be.
People sometimes use food, drugs, etc. as buffers against their pains and problems. We use them because we don't want to see who and what we are. We forget that we are fallen men and women - and that we need help...help from God Himself.

What are you asking. The church isn't against people who are obese. But one of the 7 deadly sins is gluttony. Anything in excess is abuse, for ourselves or others.

if religious, obese people need motivation to lose weight, then God would have to be the answer, no? it won't take care of those obese people that don't go to church but there are plenty of other role models to inspire them (for example all these celebrities that are losing weight on some diet plan)

There are some churches that try that, usually quoting that stupid "Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit" crap. Unfortunately there are also the old traditions of not judging character from external appearances, and of welcoming the outcast and persecuted. And there is the nagging notion that peace and justice are more pressing issues than the shape of one's earthly body. Most telling, the fatter Christians often have more to contribute to the faith community than the narcissistic ones.

I don't know that the church can because it is largely "broken". If people can resolve the issues such as loneliness, rejection, etc. that cause them to over eat, then they can overcome gluttony. That will in turn help them with their obesity.
