and to answer the real question.....
The most expensive bottle of Cognac is called Timeless and it was made by Hennessy from a blend of eleven cognacs dating from 1900 to 1990. Only 2,000 bottles were produced (actually to mark the millennium) and each one was numbered. At the time it cost about $5,000 USD per bottle, probably more now.
This surpassed the previous record holder, which was Hardy's Perfection which cost $4,000 per bottle.

Like anything else, you can pay as much as you want to pay for cognac. However, you should be aware that all cognac is made in France's Cognac district, and the laws there are VERY precise as to how cognac must be produced. The end result is that even the lower-cost cognacs are of such high quality that 99% of what you are paying for in the more expensive varieties is the bottle.
Some say that the age of the cognac makes a significant difference, but all cognac is aged for at least 2 1/2 years in new oak barrels, which is more than enough time for a strong liquor to pick up the characteristics of oak. The truth is that you will likely not be able to tell the difference between cognac of differing ages. If you are ineterested, most cognac is designated VS, which is barrel-aged at least 2 1/2 years. VSOP cognac is the next grade up, which is aged for 4 years. The highest grade is XO cognac, which is aged for 6 years. As you can see, there is not a lot of difference. Liquors with more compex bases, such as whiskey and scotch, benefit more from aging.
Another user suggested armagnac. While this is not cognac, it is a type of brandy (as is cognac), and is produced in France's Armagnac district which is next to the Cognac district. Due to cognac's fame and notoriety, armagnac is significantly less expensive. However, the makers of armagnac typically take even more care and precision in producing their product, as they are trying hard to compete with the much more popular cognac. The two beverages are identical, other than a slight geographical difference as to where they are produced. For your money, a good bottle of armagnac would probably be a better buy than a similarly priced bottle of cognac.
